Ileum
The ileum is the distal portion of the small intestine, thinner-walled than the jejunum and terminating at the ileocecal valve, and reattachment here means rejoining a transected ileal segment to itself to restore continuity, commonly after trauma, an inadvertent surgical transection, or a staged procedure being reversed. Because the terminal ileum sits near the ileocecal valve and absorbs vitamin B12 and bile salts, its position relative to that valve is often noted in documentation even when the valve itself is not involved. The ileum's comparatively narrower lumen and thinner wall relative to jejunum can make anastomotic technique slightly more exacting. As with other small bowel reattachments, this code applies only when the same ileal segment is reconnected, not when it is joined to a different structure such as colon.
Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
