The right carotid body, a chemoreceptor situated at the bifurcation of the right common carotid artery, monitors arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide tension and helps regulate respiratory drive. Release is the appropriate root operation when this small structure is freed from surrounding adhesions or restrictive fibrous tissue without any portion of the carotid body being cut out, as might occur when scarring from prior neck surgery or radiation binds it to the carotid sheath.
