Coccygeal Glomus

The coccygeal glomus, also called the glomus coccygeum, is a small vascular and neural structure at the tip of the coccyx believed to function as a chemoreceptor or vascular shunt. Release refers to freeing this structure from abnormal adhesions or fibrous bands, an uncommon procedure that might arise in the context of coccygeal pain syndromes or prior pelvic surgery causing localized scarring. Because the glomus lies in a deep, narrow region near the sacrococcygeal ligaments and rectal wall, dissection must proceed carefully to avoid injury to adjacent structures.
