Colic Artery, Middle
The middle colic artery, a branch of the superior mesenteric artery, supplies the transverse colon and forms an anastomotic link between the right and left colic circulations through the marginal artery. Release of this vessel addresses external compression from adhesions, fibrosis, or a mass effect impinging on its course through the transverse mesocolon, commonly following prior abdominal surgery or inflammatory processes affecting the pancreas or omentum. Because the middle colic artery serves as a key collateral bridge between the two mesenteric circulations, its release requires particular caution, as inadvertent injury during dissection could compromise perfusion to the transverse colon or disrupt the anastomotic network that other colonic segments may depend on.
