Esophagogastric Junction

Release of the esophagogastric junction targets the specific transition zone where the esophagus joins the stomach, freeing it from adhesions, fibrous bands, or scar tissue that restrict its normal function or mobility, commonly resulting from chronic reflux disease, prior antireflux surgery, or hiatal hernia repair. This junction contains the lower esophageal sphincter and is anchored by the phrenoesophageal ligament at the diaphragmatic hiatus, so releasing constricting tissue here can affect the delicate balance between free passage of food and prevention of reflux. Surgeons approaching this area work in close proximity to the vagus nerve trunks and the diaphragmatic crura, structures essential to both motility and hiatal support. Documentation should distinguish this release, which frees the junction from external constraint, from fundoplication or other procedures that intentionally alter sphincter tension.

Approach: Percutaneous

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope. It differs from Open in that the site itself is never exposed, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic in that no endoscope is used to see internal structures.
