A well-known example is popliteal artery entrapment syndrome, where an abnormally positioned calf muscle compresses the artery behind the knee and causes leg pain with exertion.

This kind of surgery is considered when imaging and symptoms point to compression from an outside structure rather than disease within the artery wall itself, and it is typically pursued in younger, often athletic patients whose symptoms come from anatomic entrapment rather than atherosclerosis.

The right foot artery encompasses the dorsalis pedis and its terminal branches that perfuse the forefoot and toes, vessels frequently compromised in peripheral arterial disease, diabetic microangiopathy, and post-traumatic scarring. Release is performed when surrounding fibrotic tissue, a tight retinaculum, or compressive scar restricts arterial flow without the artery itself requiring incision or tissue removal. Given the small caliber and superficial course of foot arteries, this is meticulous, often loupe- or microscope-assisted dissection distinguishing vessel from surrounding tendon sheaths and periosteum.
