Procedure Overview

Release procedures free a urinary structure, typically the ureter or kidney, from surrounding scar tissue, adhesions, or other tissue that is compressing or restricting it, without cutting into or removing the structure itself. Ureterolysis, the freeing of a ureter trapped in retroperitoneal fibrosis or scar tissue from prior surgery or radiation, is the most frequent example. The purpose is to relieve pressure that is causing obstruction or pain, allowing the structure to move and function normally again.

Patients who need this procedure often have a history of pelvic surgery, radiation therapy, endometriosis, or a chronic inflammatory condition that has caused fibrous tissue to encase the ureter, leading to progressive kidney drainage problems if left untreated.

The right kidney pelvis is the funnel-shaped collecting structure where urine gathers from the calyces before draining into the ureter, and release here frees this structure from adhesions, fibrosis, or a constricting band, most often related to a stone-associated inflammatory process, prior surgery, or ureteropelvic junction scarring. Because the pelvis narrows into the ureter at a site prone to obstruction, releasing surrounding restrictive tissue can relieve hydronephrosis without requiring reconstruction of the drainage pathway itself.
