Release procedures free the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, or pancreas from an abnormal band of scar tissue, adhesion, or other constricting structure that is restricting its movement or function, without cutting into or removing any of the organ itself. The surgeon divides or removes only the confining material, leaving the organ intact.

Liver, Right Lobe
The right lobe is the larger of the liver's two anatomic lobes, separated from the left by the falciform ligament and further divided functionally into anterior and posterior segments by the right hepatic vein. Release of the right lobe involves freeing this portion of the organ from adhesions or constricting bands, commonly encountered after prior right upper quadrant surgery, subphrenic infection, or inflammatory processes that tether the lobe to the diaphragm or abdominal wall. Its proximity to the diaphragm and right kidney means adhesions here can restrict respiratory motion or complicate subsequent hepatic procedures if not addressed. As with liver release generally, no parenchyma is excised; the coding applies to lysis of restricting tissue specific to the right lobe rather than the organ as a whole.
Approach: Open
Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site.
