The pretibial skin and subcutaneous layer are thin with limited mobility even normally, so pathological tightening here can be especially functionally significant, and surgeons document the release carefully given the limited soft tissue reserve for closure. Superficial veins, including tributaries of the great and small saphenous systems, traverse this layer and are typically noted in the operative report. As with the right side, laterality must be specified, and the procedure is coded as Release only when the tissue is freed from constraint without any portion being excised.
Approach: Open
Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
