Tendon release frees a tendon from an abnormal physical constraint, such as scar tissue, adhesions, or a tight surrounding sheath, that is restricting its normal movement or causing pain. This is the procedure behind common conditions like trigger finger, where the A1 pulley is divided to let the flexor tendon glide freely again, and de Quervain's tenosynovitis, where a thickened tendon sheath is opened to relieve compression on the tendons underneath.
Release is also used for conditions like tennis elbow when conservative treatment fails, where fibrotic or degenerated tissue tethering the tendon is divided to reduce tension and pain, and for contractures where a tendon has become abnormally short or bound down, limiting joint motion. The tendon tissue itself is not cut through or removed; only the constraining material around it is divided or released.
