Thoracic Duct
The thoracic duct is the principal conduit carrying lymph and chyle from the lower body and left upper quadrant into the venous system near the left subclavian-jugular junction, running through the posterior mediastinum alongside the aorta and esophagus. Removal here means taking out some or all of this duct without replacement, a step sometimes required when the duct is damaged, chylous leak cannot be controlled by ligation alone, or a portion is excised during esophagectomy or other mediastinal oncologic surgery. Because the duct is thin-walled, variable in course, and easily injured, documentation should specify whether the excision was partial or total and note any resulting chylothorax risk.
