Tibial Nerve
The tibial nerve is the larger terminal branch of the sciatic nerve, running down the back of the leg through the popliteal fossa and tarsal tunnel to supply the calf muscles and the sole of the foot. Injury commonly follows knee dislocation, deep laceration of the posterior leg, or entrapment within the tarsal tunnel, and can impair plantarflexion and produce numbness on the sole that predisposes patients to unnoticed foot injury.
