Orbit, Left

The left orbit is the bony socket surrounding the eye, assembled from several facial and cranial bones with a floor and medial wall that are notably thin and vulnerable to fracture with herniation of orbital fat or muscle. Replacement is performed when trauma, tumor, or chronic bone erosion has created a defect large enough to cause enophthalmos, globe malposition, or restricted extraocular movement, and simple realignment of native bone is not possible. Surgeons typically place a titanium mesh, resorbable or porous polyethylene implant, or autologous bone graft along the orbital floor or wall through a transconjunctival, subciliary, or coronal approach, taking care to avoid the infraorbital nerve and to support the globe at the correct depth.
