This differs from simply patching a hole, since the intent is for the new material to serve in place of the muscle going forward.

These procedures are reserved for situations where enough native muscle is missing that repair alone would not restore adequate function or contour, such as reconstructive surgery following cancer removal or a severe crush injury. Recovery generally involves protecting the graft or implant site while it integrates.

Perineum Muscle

Replacement of the perineum muscle addresses the superficial transverse perineal, bulbospongiosus, or ischiocavernosus fibers that anchor the pelvic floor between the genitals and anus, typically using synthetic mesh or biologic graft. Surgeons turn to this operation after severe obstetric tearing, chronic perineal descent, or failed prior repair leaves native tissue too attenuated to support the rectum, vagina, or urethra. Because the perineal body is a fibromuscular hub where several muscle groups converge, documentation must specify which segment is replaced and distinguish it from concurrent sphincteroplasty or fistula repair, which are coded separately even when performed through the same incision.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
