Procedure Overview
Replacement procedures take out a diseased or damaged segment of an upper artery and put in biological or synthetic material, such as a graft, to physically stand in for the tissue that was removed. This differs from simply patching or reinforcing a vessel, since Replacement involves substituting material that takes over both the structure and function of the artery segment that's gone.
This approach is used when a section of artery, in the subclavian, axillary, brachial, or related upper-extremity vessels, is too diseased, aneurysmal, or damaged to be safely repaired and left in place. A synthetic graft, a segment of the patient's own vein, or donor tissue is sewn in to reconnect the artery and restore blood flow through that portion of the limb or upper body.
Replacement is a more involved undertaking than a straightforward repair, since it typically requires removing the compromised segment of vessel first before positioning and securing the substitute material in its place.

Radial Artery, Right
The right radial artery runs along the thumb side of the forearm as the smaller terminal branch of the brachial artery and has become especially prominent as the preferred access site for cardiac catheterization and coronary intervention because of its superficial location and lower bleeding risk compared with femoral access. Repeated cannulation, spasm, or occlusion from prior procedures can damage the vessel to a degree that requires more than simple repair, and it is also the vessel most often harvested for use as a coronary artery bypass graft, which can leave a segment needing reconstruction. Replacement involves excising the affected length and inserting a graft, generally through a volar forearm incision near the wrist. Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
