Procedure Overview

Replacement procedures on the upper joints put in a device, either biological or synthetic, that physically takes over for all or part of a joint that has been removed or destroyed by disease or injury. Total or partial joint arthroplasty of the shoulder, elbow, or wrist falls into this family, along with implantation of artificial finger or toe joints for severe arthritis. Given the functional importance of shoulder motion for reaching and lifting, surgeons select the implant configuration based on cuff status, bone quality, and prior surgical history, and records should specify which arthroplasty type was performed since anatomic and reverse systems are not interchangeable in coding or clinical meaning.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
