Trachea

Because the trachea has no true anatomic substitute, replacement is technically demanding and less common than in vascular or orthopedic applications, often reserved for cases where segmental resection with primary anastomosis is not feasible due to the length of diseased airway. Its close relationship to the esophagus posteriorly and the great vessels near the thoracic inlet means the replacement material must maintain both structural rigidity to resist collapse and enough flexibility to accommodate neck and chest movement without impinging on adjacent structures.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
