These operations are performed when an organ or duct has shifted out of its normal position due to trauma, prior surgery, or an anatomic anomaly present from birth, and simply moving it back restores proper function. It's a less frequently used root operation in this body system compared to organs like the testes or ovaries, but it still applies whenever relocation, rather than removal or reconstruction, is the surgeon's stated objective.

Common Bile Duct

The common bile duct forms from the union of the common hepatic and cystic ducts and carries bile through the head of the pancreas to empty at the ampulla of Vater, making it central to both hepatic and pancreatic drainage. Reposition of this duct is performed when its course has been distorted, for example by a periampullary mass, prior surgical adhesions, or anatomic anomaly, and the surgeon mobilizes the duct to restore a normal, unobstructed path to the duodenum without excising or replacing any ductal segment. Because the common bile duct passes in close proximity to major vascular structures and through pancreatic tissue, repositioning requires careful dissection to avoid injury, and documentation should distinguish this relocation from procedures that create a new drainage route or remove diseased duct.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
