Pancreatic Duct
The pancreatic duct, or duct of Wirsung, extends the length of the pancreas and empties exocrine secretions through the ampulla of Vater into the duodenum. Reposition of this duct is performed when a segment has become displaced or kinked, for instance following trauma, prior pancreatic surgery, or in association with a pseudocyst distorting the ductal course, and the surgeon mobilizes the affected segment to restore its normal drainage path without excising or grafting the duct. Because the pancreatic duct is embedded within glandular tissue and closely associated with major peripancreatic vessels, repositioning requires careful dissection to avoid injuring the surrounding parenchyma, and documentation should specify that the duct segment was moved to a corrected location rather than bypassed or reconstructed with substitute material.
Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
