The thumb phalanges are the proximal and distal bones forming the pollex, distinct from the fingers in having only two segments rather than three and in bearing the greater mechanical load of pinch and grip. Reposition of a right thumb phalanx is performed for displaced or malunited fractures, or for a phalanx pulled out of alignment by ligamentous injury at the interphalangeal or metacarpophalangeal joint, where restoring precise axial and rotational alignment is critical to preserving opposition and pinch strength.
