Because Resection means the entire body part is taken out rather than a portion of it, the distinction from partial removal matters clinically and surgically. A total hysterectomy removes the whole uterus, while a partial or supracervical hysterectomy leaves the cervix behind, changing both the postoperative anatomy and the code assigned. The cervix is the narrow, fibromuscular lower segment of the uterus that opens into the vagina and serves as the barrier and conduit between the uterine cavity and the vaginal canal. Isolated resection of the cervix, or trachelectomy, is performed for early-stage cervical cancer in a patient wishing to preserve fertility, in which case the uterine corpus is left intact and reconnected to the upper vagina, or as completion surgery when a prior supracervical hysterectomy left the cervical stump in place and it later becomes symptomatic or dysplastic. The procedure requires careful dissection near the ureters and uterine vessels, which run close to the cervix within the cardinal ligaments, and documentation should distinguish this isolated cervical excision from removal of the cervix as part of a total hysterectomy.

Approach: Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic

Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic describes instrumentation introduced through a natural orifice or a surgically created opening while using an endoscope for visualization, as in a routine colonoscopy performed through the anus. It differs from the plain Via Natural or Artificial Opening value by the added scope, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic by using an existing passage rather than a new skin puncture.
