Resection procedures remove an entire ear, nose, or sinus structure without replacing it, most often to treat cancer, extensive chronic infection, or irreversible structural damage. A total mastoidectomy, which clears out diseased mastoid air cells down to the bone in cases of severe chronic otitis media or cholesteatoma, is a common example, as is total or subtotal removal of a nasal or sinus structure for tumor control. Total auriculectomy, removing the entire external ear, may be performed for skin cancer that has invaded the ear's cartilage framework.
Because resection removes the whole body part rather than just a portion, it's a more definitive and often more disfiguring intervention than partial excision, and it's usually reserved for situations where conservative treatment or partial removal wouldn't adequately control disease. Reconstruction, if performed, happens as a separate step - sometimes in the same operative session, sometimes staged for later.

Nasal Turbinate

Because turbinates play a physiologic role in conditioning airflow, complete removal carries a recognized risk of empty nose syndrome, with resulting dryness and paradoxical obstruction, which is a consideration surgeons weigh before choosing total resection over more limited techniques. Documentation should specify whether the inferior, middle, or superior turbinate was removed in its entirety, as this determines correct body part assignment.
Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
