Because the device or technique only reduces the diameter of the passage rather than blocking it entirely, patients generally keep circulation to the limb or organ the artery supplies, unlike procedures that fully seal off a vessel.

The left peroneal artery lies deep between the tibia and fibula, functioning as an important collateral pathway to the foot when the anterior or posterior tibial arteries are compromised by atherosclerotic disease. Restriction narrows this vessel's diameter, generally through an intraluminal stent deployed via catheter to treat stenosis threatening the last viable runoff channel in cases of advanced tibial disease.
