These procedures do not close the passage completely; some degree of flow is preserved, which is what separates restriction from occlusion. Patients typically pursue these options after conservative measures like pelvic floor therapy have not adequately controlled symptoms, or when imaging or urodynamic testing has identified a specific area of the urinary tract that needs mechanical narrowing to function properly.

Ureter, Right

The right ureter is the muscular tube transporting urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder, and segments of it can become abnormally dilated, tortuous, or refluxing, particularly near the ureterovesical junction. Restriction narrows the lumen at the affected segment, commonly by placing a stent, suture, or band that reduces caliber to correct reflux or redundancy while keeping the passage patent, which sets it apart from an occlusion that would block flow outright. Because the right ureter courses near the iliac vessels, gonadal vessels, and the appendix, the level of narrowing should be documented precisely, whether upper, mid, or lower ureteral, along with the technique used. Coding requires laterality to be specified, and clinicians should distinguish restriction of the ureter proper from restriction performed at the kidney pelvis or bladder, which are separate body parts.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
