Restriction procedures partially close an opening or narrow the inside diameter of a tubular structure in the heart or great vessels without fully blocking it. A familiar example is banding the pulmonary artery to reduce excessive blood flow to the lungs in an infant with a congenital heart defect, a staged palliative step used before a full repair is possible.
The purpose is to control blood flow through a vessel or opening that is currently too wide or too permissive, protecting downstream tissue from damage caused by excess pressure or volume. This is different from completely sealing off a structure, since some flow is intended to continue, just at a reduced rate.
Restriction procedures appear most often in pediatric cardiac care, where banding techniques buy time for a child to grow before a more definitive surgical correction is performed.

Ventricle, Left
The left ventricle is the heart's primary pumping chamber, ejecting oxygenated blood into the systemic circulation through the aortic valve, and it can become pathologically enlarged from chronic volume overload, ischemic remodeling, or dilated cardiomyopathy. Restricting the left ventricle narrows an abnormal opening or dilated segment within the chamber, such as a surgically reduced left ventricular aneurysm neck or an outflow tract narrowed to address obstruction, using suture techniques or implanted material to constrain the diameter. This is distinct from procedures that resect or reshape ventricular wall tissue outright. Given the left ventricle's central hemodynamic role, any restriction of its internal geometry is documented carefully in relation to ejection fraction and wall motion findings that justified the intervention.
Approach: Open
Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
Device: Extraluminal Device
Extraluminal Device describes a device positioned on the outside surface of a tubular or hollow body part rather than within its lumen, such as a vascular banding or external stabilization device.
