Unlike a replacement, the body's own tissue stays in place and the added material works alongside it.

Patients typically encounter this term in the context of congenital defect closures, aortic aneurysm repairs, and valve repair techniques that use patches, rings, or other reinforcing materials rather than swapping out the whole valve or vessel.

Supplementing the right atrium involves reinforcing the wall of this chamber, which receives systemic venous return from the superior and inferior vena cavae and the coronary sinus, using patch material to repair a thinned, aneurysmal, or surgically opened area of the atrial wall. This is commonly performed following cannulation sites used during cardiopulmonary bypass, after tumor resection from the atrial wall, or as part of reconstructing the chamber in complex congenital repairs such as the Fontan procedure, where atrial wall augmentation helps redirect venous flow. Because the right atrium is a thin-walled, low-pressure chamber, added material must maintain structural integrity without restricting the chamber's compliance or the nearby tricuspid valve annulus and sinoatrial node, which lies near the junction of the right atrium and superior vena cava. This is distinguished from atrial septal supplementation by involving the free wall rather than the dividing septum.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
