Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic describes instrumentation introduced through a natural orifice or a surgically created opening while using an endoscope for visualization, as in a routine colonoscopy performed through the anus. It differs from the plain Via Natural or Artificial Opening value by the added scope, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic by using an existing passage rather than a new skin puncture.

Nonautologous Tissue Substitute refers to biologic material sourced from a donor or another species, such as an allograft or xenograft, used to replace a body part. A coder should look for documentation stating that existing tissue was reinforced or augmented with a graft, mesh, or other material, as opposed to language describing removal and replacement of the structure. Operative notes typically specify the material used (autologous tissue, allograft, or synthetic mesh) and the body part reinforced. The most common assignment error is confusing Supplement with Replacement, which requires that the original tissue be taken out; if any native urinary structure remains in place and is simply bolstered, Supplement is the correct root operation, not Replacement.
Another frequent mistake is selecting Repair instead of Supplement when a graft material was actually added, since Repair is reserved for restoring a body part to its original structure without added material.
