Gastric Vein
The gastric veins drain the stomach and typically empty into the portal or splenic vein, forming part of the portosystemic network that becomes clinically prominent when portal hypertension develops. Supplement of a gastric vein reinforces a segment of the vessel wall with graft material, an intervention considered when the vein has been weakened by disease, prior variceal bleeding, or surgical dissection near the gastroesophageal junction. Because these veins are small and variably distributed along the lesser and greater curvatures, the specific vessel treated should be clearly documented. Reinforcing rather than resecting preserves venous drainage pathways that, if additional collateral routes are already compromised by liver disease, may be important for maintaining adequate portal decompression.
