Procedure Overview

Supplement procedures in this family involve placing biological or synthetic material into or onto a lower extremity anatomical region to physically reinforce or add bulk to existing tissue, rather than to replace missing structure. Surgical mesh used to reinforce weakened fascia or a defect in the leg or foot region, or an autologous or donor graft layered onto tissue to strengthen it, are typical examples.

This type of procedure is chosen when the body part is present and largely intact but needs additional support to hold its shape, resist strain, or heal properly, such as reinforcing a soft-tissue closure after trauma or a prior surgical repair. It differs from simply closing or repairing a wound because material is deliberately added to bolster the area beyond what the patient's own tissue can currently provide.

Inguinal Region, Left

On the left, the inguinal region requires supplement most often when reinforcing material is placed to strengthen fascia weakened by chronic strain, prior surgery, or radiation, or when soft tissue bulk is restored after lymphedema-related debulking or oncologic resection nearby. Because this region houses the femoral triangle and inguinal canal, procedures here are performed with attention to preserving vascular and lymphatic structures while adding graft or synthetic material to the surrounding soft tissue envelope. Supplement is coded rather than repair when the goal is augmentation of intact but deficient tissue rather than closure of a disrupted structure, and documentation should specify the material placed and its relationship to the canal and vessels.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure.
