Procedure Overview

Supplement procedures add biological or synthetic material to reinforce or augment a lower joint that is still structurally present but needs additional support. Lumbar Vertebral Disc

The lumbar vertebral disc is the fibrocartilaginous cushion sitting between two adjacent lumbar vertebral bodies, absorbing axial load and permitting flexion, extension, and rotation of the low back. Supplement procedures on this structure involve placing material, most often an artificial nucleus, biologic scaffold, or synthetic annular repair device, into or around the existing disc to reinforce its height or containment rather than excising and swapping the whole disc, which would instead be coded as replacement. This is used for early degenerative disc disease, annular tears, or after limited discectomy where some native disc tissue remains.
