Procedure Overview

The right metatarsal-phalangeal joint, most often the first MTP joint at the base of the great toe, bears substantial load during push-off and is prone to cartilage wear from hallux rigidus or capsular attenuation from bunion deformities; supplementing this joint involves adding cartilage substitute or ligamentous graft material to preserve motion when the joint surface is compromised but not destroyed enough to warrant fusion or replacement. Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
