Procedure Overview

Supplement procedures add biological or synthetic material to reinforce or augment a lower joint that is still structurally present but needs additional support. Ligament reconstruction, such as an ACL or PCL graft in the knee, is the classic example, along with labral augmentation in the hip or cartilage grafting. Unlike replacement, the native joint stays in place; the surgery strengthens a weakened or torn portion of it.

Grafts can come from the patient's own tissue, a donor, or synthetic material, and the choice often depends on age, activity level, and the structure being reinforced. These procedures are common after athletic injuries, aiming to restore stability so the joint can withstand normal or athletic loads again.

Toe Phalangeal Joint, Right

The right toe phalangeal joint, an interphalangeal articulation within one of the smaller toes, may need supplementing when a plantar plate tear, capsular laxity, or cartilage thinning destabilizes the joint without destroying its overall structure, commonly seen alongside hammertoe deformities or chronic overload from an adjacent bunion. A small graft or synthetic material is placed to reinforce the joint capsule or resurface the articular cartilage, preserving flexion and extension needed for balanced toe-off during gait. Because these joints are small and numerous, the specific toe and joint level, proximal or distal interphalangeal, must be documented precisely, and clinicians should note whether the material placed is biologic or synthetic, as this determines the applicable device qualifier.

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope.
