Trachea

The trachea is the cartilage-ringed airway connecting the larynx to the bronchial tree, and supplementing it involves reinforcing a weakened, stenotic, or previously repaired segment with autologous tissue or biological graft material rather than replacing the airway outright. This is typically performed for tracheomalacia, post-intubation stricture, or after prior tracheal surgery where the wall lacks adequate structural support, using material such as cartilage grafts or synthetic mesh sewn along the affected segment to restore rigidity and prevent airway collapse. Because the trachea sits centrally in the neck and upper mediastinum in close relation to the esophagus, recurrent laryngeal nerves, and great vessels, augmentation procedures demand precise placement to avoid compromising these adjacent structures while achieving a patent, stable airway.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
