Supplement is indicated when this muscle bulk is diminished, such as after chronic quadriceps atrophy from prolonged immobilization, following sarcoma resection leaving a residual muscle deficit, or when reinforcing tissue over an orthopedic implant, distinct from suturing a torn muscle or removing damaged tissue. Surgeons place dermal substitute or synthetic mesh against the thinned muscle to restore contour and mechanical support, sometimes in conjunction with staged flap reconstruction. Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
