Because the native body part remains in place and is only being reinforced, these operations are generally less invasive than a full reconstruction. Patients may encounter this family of procedures in the context of bladder augmentation for capacity problems, pelvic floor support surgery, or reinforcement of a ureteral repair.

Ureter, Right

Supplementing the right ureter means reinforcing its wall with grafted tissue or substitute material at a site of weakness, most often following repair of a stricture, fistula, or a defect left after excising a diseased segment where the ureter's own tissue cannot be relied upon to hold the repair alone. Because the ureter is a narrow, thin-walled tube prone to stricture if reinforced improperly, the type of graft material and its placement affect long-term patency and the risk of recurrent obstruction. This procedure is distinct from ureteral replacement, since it augments existing ureteral tissue rather than substituting an entirely new conduit. The right ureter's course near the vena cava and duodenum can constrain the surgical field available for graft placement.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.

Device: Synthetic Substitute

Synthetic Substitute designates a device made from manufactured, non-biologic material, such as mesh or prosthetic components, used to replace or augment a body part. It is distinguished from the two tissue substitute categories by its artificial composition, which carries different considerations for integration and long-term durability than biologic grafts.
