Procedure Overview

Supplement procedures add biological or synthetic material to reinforce or enhance a portion of the heart or a great vessel without removing the existing structure. Common examples include patch repair of a septal defect, reinforcing a weakened area of the aortic wall, or placing material to strengthen a valve annulus during repair.

The goal is to shore up tissue that is present but insufficient on its own, whether because of a congenital hole, an aneurysm that has thinned the vessel wall, or a valve structure that needs extra support to function properly. Unlike a replacement, the body's own tissue stays in place and the added material works alongside it.

Patients typically encounter this term in the context of congenital defect closures, aortic aneurysm repairs, and valve repair techniques that use patches, rings, or other reinforcing materials rather than swapping out the whole valve or vessel.

Ventricular Septum

The ventricular septum is the thick muscular wall dividing the left and right ventricles, and it can be congenitally deficient, as in ventricular septal defects, or acquired, as in post-infarction septal rupture, both of which allow abnormal shunting between the chambers. Supplementing the ventricular septum means closing or reinforcing a defect with a patch of pericardial tissue or synthetic material sewn across the deficient area to eliminate the shunt while preserving surrounding septal muscle, a technique central to congenital defect repair and post-infarction septal rupture closure. Because the septum lies adjacent to the conduction system, particularly the bundle of His near the membranous portion, patch placement must avoid injuring these structures to prevent postoperative heart block, and documentation should note the septal location, since membranous, muscular, and inlet defects carry different surgical approaches.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.

Nonautologous Tissue Substitute refers to biologic material sourced from a donor or another species, such as an allograft or xenograft, used to replace a body part.
