Intentional poisoning with substances that impact uric acid levels, possibly for malicious reasons or self-harm. Misuse or accidental ingestion of medications containing uric acid-altering drugs. Exposure through assault involving drugs that affect uric acid metabolism.

Key Symptoms: Sudden joint pain, especially in the big toe, ankles, or knees Swelling and redness in affected joints Signs of kidney problems such as dark-colored urine, decreased urine output, or flank pain Nausea and vomiting Fever and chills if infection is present or systemic response occurs General weakness and fatigue Potential neurological symptoms if the poisoning severe, including confusion or seizures

Diagnosis Path: Review of medical history, including medication usage and any evidence of assault Physical examination focusing on joints and renal function Laboratory tests measuring uric acid levels in blood and urine Blood tests to assess kidney function (creatinine, BUN) and complete blood count Toxicology screenings to identify specific substances involved Imaging studies, such as ultrasound or X-rays, if joint damage or kidney stones are suspected

Treatment Protocols: Immediate discontinuation of the offending drug or toxin Supportive care such as hydration to facilitate detoxification and support kidney function Medications to manage pain and inflammation in joint-related symptoms Use of medications to lower uric acid levels if chronically elevated, under medical supervision Dialysis in severe cases involving kidney failure Monitoring for signs of systemic toxicity, infection, or other complications Psychological evaluation and intervention if poisoning was intentional or related to self-harm
