H04.01
Acute dacryoadenitis
Clinical Classification Guidelines
Medical Intelligence & Overview
Acute dacryoadenitis is a sudden inflammation of the lacrimal gland, which is responsible for producing tears. This condition leads to swelling and pain around the outer part of the upper eyelid and can affect one or both eyes. The inflammation can cause ocular discomfort, redness, and swelling, potentially impacting vision if not managed properly. Though often associated with infections, it may also result from other causes that trigger the body's immune response.
Causes & Symptoms
Clinical Causes: Viral infections, especially mumps and influenza Bacterial infections Autoimmune conditions, such as Sjögren's syndrome or sarcoidosis Injury or trauma to the eyelid area Other systemic illnesses that cause inflammation
Key Symptoms: Sudden swelling and tenderness over the outer part of the eyelid Redness of the eyelid and surrounding area Pain or discomfort around the affected eye Swelling may cause the eyelid to appear enlarged Reduced or impaired tear production Possible fever if an infection is involved Sensitivity to light or blurry vision in some cases
Diagnostic & Treatment
Diagnosis Path: Blood tests to identify infectious agents or inflammatory markers Imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI to assess the lacrimal gland and surrounding tissues Cultures or swabs if bacterial infection is suspected
Treatment Protocols: Application of warm compresses to reduce swelling and discomfort Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief Antibiotics if a bacterial infection is identified Antiviral medications in case of viral infection, if appropriate Corticosteroids may be used in severe or autoimmune-related cases Rest and supportive care to aid recovery
