Clinical Causes: Genetic factors that predispose to abnormal cell growth in the mouth Chronic irritation or trauma from dental appliances or habits such as thumb sucking Infections, including HPV (human papillomavirus), which can contribute to abnormal cell proliferation Environmental exposures, such as exposure to certain chemicals or tobacco use Pre-existing benign conditions or scars that may develop into neoplasms

Key Symptoms: Lumps or bumps in the mouth that are usually painless A growth that slowly increases in size over weeks or months Possible localized swelling or thickening of the oral tissues Occasional discomfort or irritation, especially if the growth is irritated by chewing or dental appliances Changes in the surface texture of the growth, such as being smooth, firm, or lobulated Rarely, bleeding or ulceration if the surface breaks down

Diagnosis Path: Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive clinical examination by a healthcare provider or dentist. They may inspect the oral cavity and palpate the growth to assess its size, texture, and location. To confirm the diagnosis and rule out malignancy, a biopsy is often performed, where a small tissue sample is collected and examined microscopically. Imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI may be utilized if the growth is large or involves deeper tissues. Additional tests may be ordered if there is suspicion of other underlying conditions.

Treatment Protocols: Surgical removal of the growth, usually performed under local anesthesia Monitoring small or asymptomatic lesions with regular follow-up Addressing any contributing factors, such as correcting dental appliances or reducing irritants In some cases, medications or topical treatments may be considered if there is associated inflammation or other conditions Post-operative care may include pain management, oral hygiene instructions, and periodic follow-up to monitor for recurrence
