Clinical Causes: Bacterial infections, such as Staphylococcus or Streptococcus species, entering the knee joint through direct trauma or nearby infections. Septic arthritis resulting from bloodstream infections impacting the joint space. Spread of infections from adjacent tissues, including skin or soft tissues around the knee. Infections caused by parasitic organisms in rare cases, especially in regions with endemic parasitic diseases. Infections associated with invasive procedures involving the knee, such as injections or surgeries.

Key Symptoms: Severe pain in the affected knee, often worsening with movement. Swelling and warmth around the joint area. Redness or discoloration of the skin overlying the knee. Limited range of motion due to pain and inflammation. Possible fever and general malaise accompanying the joint symptoms. Difficulty bearing weight or walking due to joint discomfort.

Diagnosis Path: Physical examination focusing on swelling, warmth, redness, and mobility. Blood tests, such as complete blood count (CBC) and inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP), to detect signs of infection. Joint aspiration to obtain synovial fluid for Gram stain, culture, and sensitivity testing, which helps identify the causative organism. Imaging studies like X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI to assess joint damage and rule out other causes of knee symptoms.

Treatment Protocols: Antibiotic or antiparasitic medications tailored to the identified pathogen, administered intravenously or orally. Drainage of infected joint fluid (aspiration or surgical drainage) to decrease bacterial load and relieve pressure. Rest and elevation of the affected leg to decrease swelling. Pain management with appropriate medications. Surgical intervention in severe cases, such as joint debridement or synovectomy, if infection persists or causes significant joint damage. Monitoring and follow-up to assess response to therapy and prevent recurrence.
