Clinical Causes: Various bacterial infections other than gonorrhea, such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, or Ureaplasma urealyticum. Viral infections, including herpes simplex virus or cytomegalovirus. Irritation from chemical substances found in soaps, spermicides, or other topical agents. Trauma from catheter insertion or vigorous sexual activity. Other underlying urinary tract infections or inflammations.

Key Symptoms: Pain or a burning sensation during urination. Increased frequency or urgency of urination. Discharge from the urethra that may be clear, cloudy, or slightly bloody. Itching or irritation at the opening of the urethra. Swelling or redness around the urethral opening. Sometimes, no noticeable symptoms, especially in the early stages.

Diagnosis Path: Urinalysis to detect signs of infection or inflammation. Urethral swab or smear to identify causative microorganisms. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for detecting specific bacterial or viral DNA or RNA. Additional tests to rule out other causes, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia infections.

Treatment Protocols: Antibiotics targeting the specific bacteria if a bacterial infection is present. Antiviral medications when a viral cause is diagnosed. Avoiding irritants and chemicals that may worsen symptoms. Refraining from sexual activity until infection clearance is confirmed. Follow-up testing to ensure resolution of the infection. Addressing any underlying factors, such as trauma or chemical exposure, to prevent recurrence.
