Clinical Causes: Autoimmune responses where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks peripheral nerves. Infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens that trigger nerve inflammation. Reaction to medications or toxins that induce nerve inflammation. Secondary to other medical conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus or Sjögren's syndrome. Idiopathic cases where no specific cause can be identified.

Key Symptoms: Generalized weakness, often starting in the limbs. Sensory disturbances such as numbness, tingling, or burning sensations. Pain, which may be sharp, stabbing, or burning in nature. Loss of reflexes, especially in the affected limbs. Muscle wasting in advanced stages. Difficulty coordinating movements or maintaining balance. Fluctuating symptoms that can worsen or improve over time. Possible autonomic symptoms, including changes in blood pressure or heart rate.

Diagnosis Path: Neurological assessment to evaluate muscle strength, reflexes, and sensory function. Electrodiagnostic studies such as nerve conduction velocities and electromyography to assess nerve and muscle activity. Blood tests to identify markers of inflammation or underlying autoimmune conditions. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis, often obtained via lumbar puncture, to detect inflammatory changes. Imaging studies such as MRI scans to rule out other causes of nerve symptoms. Exclusion of other specific polyneuropathies based on clinical and laboratory findings.

Treatment Protocols: Immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory medications like corticosteroids. Plasmapheresis (plasma exchange) to remove harmful antibodies from the blood. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy to support immune regulation. Pain management through medications such as analgesics or anticonvulsants. Physical therapy to maintain muscle strength and improve mobility. Occupational therapy to assist with daily activities. Monitoring and managing any underlying autoimmune or infectious conditions.
