Key Symptoms: Persistent coughing that lasts longer than a few weeks Cough that produces minimal or no mucus Sensation of tickling or irritation in the throat Cough worse at specific times, such as at night or in the morning Possible associated symptoms like sore throat, hoarseness, or chest discomfort Sometimes, cough may occur without significant respiratory symptomatology

Diagnosis Path: Reviewing the patient's medical history, including duration and triggers of the cough Physical exam focusing on the respiratory and ENT systems Chest X-ray or imaging studies if structural abnormalities are suspected Allergy testing to identify potential allergens Pulmonary function tests to evaluate for conditions like asthma Gastroenterological assessment if reflux is suspected Analysis of mucus or throat swabs if infection is suspected

Treatment Protocols: Avoidance of known irritants or allergens Use of antihistamines or allergy medications for allergic causes Reflux management with dietary changes and medications Use of inhalers or bronchodilators if asthma or airway hyperreactivity is involved Cough suppressants or throat lozenges for symptom relief Behavioral therapy or speech therapy if the cough has a psychogenic component Treating any underlying infections with appropriate medications Smoking cessation if applicable
