This might involve returning to the operating room after a hip, knee, or vascular procedure to stop bleeding from a surgical site, or addressing acute bleeding from trauma to the leg or foot.
Patients need this kind of intervention when a wound or surgical site continues to bleed despite initial measures, requiring a clinician to reopen or directly address the site to achieve hemostasis. The techniques used can include direct pressure, cautery, suture ligation, or packing, and the choice depends on the location and severity of the bleeding.
Because postoperative bleeding can signal a serious complication, timely control is important to prevent blood loss, hematoma formation, and further complications, and successful treatment allows the underlying surgical or traumatic issue to heal without ongoing hemorrhage.

Control of the left foot concerns hemorrhage among its many small bones and the terminal branches of the dorsalis pedis and plantar arteries that supply the forefoot, midfoot, and toes. This type of bleeding is encountered during procedures such as bunionectomy, toe or partial foot amputation, diabetic ulcer debridement, or fracture fixation, where the dense but small-caliber vascular network makes diffuse oozing more typical than bleeding from one dominant vessel. Approach: Percutaneous
Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope. It differs from Open in that the site itself is never exposed, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic in that no endoscope is used to see internal structures. Common examples include needle biopsies and injections.

The most common assignment mistake is defaulting to Control whenever a word like hemostasis appears in a note, even when the documentation actually describes a more specific repair of a named vessel, which should be coded to Repair or another applicable root operation instead. Coders also need to distinguish bleeding controlled during the original procedure, which is not separately coded, from a return to the operating room for bleeding after the fact, which is when Control becomes reportable.
