Common reasons for this type of procedure include synovectomy for rheumatoid or inflammatory arthritis, debridement of a labral or cartilage tear, or removal of an osteophyte that is blocking joint movement. Because only a portion of the structure is taken and the joint itself is not replaced or reconstructed, patients typically recover function through physical therapy rather than needing an implant or prosthesis afterward.

Thoracolumbar Vertebral Joint

The thoracolumbar vertebral joint refers to the facet articulation at the T12-L1 level, the anatomic hinge where the kyphotic thoracic spine meets the lordotic lumbar spine. This junction concentrates mechanical stress because it is also where the relatively rigid, rib-stabilized thoracic segment gives way to the more mobile lumbar column, making it a common site for degenerative change, fracture, and post-traumatic arthropathy. Facet pathology here can present with pain that is difficult to localize to either region clinically. Excision at this joint is typically performed for degenerative arthritis, synovial cysts, or as part of decompression for nerve impingement near the junction, and precise documentation of the T12-L1 level distinguishes it from the broader thoracic or lumbar facet joint series.

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope.
