Lower Extremity

Radiography of the lower extremity spans the hip, femur, knee, tibia and fibula, ankle, and foot, and the specific bones included depend on the clinical question, whether that is a twisting ankle injury, suspected stress fracture in a runner, or preoperative planning before joint replacement. Weight-bearing views are often specifically requested for the knee or foot to assess joint space narrowing or alignment under physiologic load, which a non-weight-bearing film cannot show. Because the lower extremity bears the body's weight and is subject to high-energy trauma, films are frequently obtained in multiple projections and may need to include the joint above and below a suspected fracture site to avoid missing an associated injury, particularly in the tibia and fibula where fractures can occur at both ends simultaneously.
