Repair is the default root operation used when an endocrine gland has been damaged - by trauma, a surgical complication, or a structural defect - and needs to be restored to its normal anatomy and function using a method not captured by any more specific root operation. Common examples include suturing a lacerated adrenal gland or closing an inadvertent capsular tear during thyroid or parathyroid surgery.
Because Repair functions as PCS's catch-all for reconstructive work on a body part, it appears whenever a surgeon fixes torn, lacerated, or otherwise structurally compromised glandular tissue without performing a more precisely defined procedure like grafting, replacement, or a named reconstructive technique. It restores the gland's physical integrity so it can continue functioning in its normal location.

Carotid Bodies, Bilateral
When both carotid bodies, located at the bifurcations of the right and left common carotid arteries, require repair within the same operative episode, the bilateral body part value applies. These paired chemoreceptors work together to signal the brainstem about blood gas changes, and simultaneous injury to both is uncommon, more often resulting from bilateral neck trauma, complications of staged or combined carotid procedures, or rare bilateral paraganglioma resections that also require restoring the adjacent chemoreceptor tissue. Because the carotid bodies sit at critical vascular junctions on each side of the neck near the vagus and hypoglossal nerves, bilateral repair carries heightened risk of affecting baroreceptor and chemoreceptor reflexes, and documentation should confirm that both sides were addressed in one encounter to justify the bilateral code.
Approach: Open
Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure.
