Use of domestic appliances such as gas-powered heaters, generators, or stoves in poorly ventilated areas. Deliberate inhalation of carbon monoxide as a method of self-harm, using sources like car exhaust fumes, charcoal, or chemicals. Accidental exposure during maintenance or repair work involving fuel-powered equipment. Ingestion or inhalation of substances contaminated with carbon monoxide from non-standard sources.

Key Symptoms: Headache or dizziness Nausea and vomiting Weakness or fatigue Confusion or disorientation Shortness of breath Loss of consciousness in severe cases Cherry-red skin color (though not always present) Pulse oximetry readings may appear normal, masking true hypoxia

Diagnosis Path: Measurement of carboxyhemoglobin levels in blood samples, which indicates carbon monoxide exposure. Assessment of symptoms and possible exposure sources, especially in cases involving self-harm. Pulse oximetry readings, alongside arterial blood gas analysis, to evaluate oxygen levels. Chest imaging if respiratory complications are suspected. Monitoring for neurological signs, especially if exposure was prolonged or severe.

Treatment Protocols: Immediate removal from the contaminated environment. Administration of 100% oxygen via mask to accelerate the elimination of carbon monoxide from the blood. Use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in severe cases to reduce tissue hypoxia and prevent long-term neurological damage. Supportive care, including intravenous fluids and medications to manage symptoms. Psychological assessment and intervention if the poisoning was intentional, to address underlying mental health issues.
