Key Symptoms: Severe burning sensation in the mouth, throat, or stomach. Pain and inflammation in the affected tissues. Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of tightness in the throat. Vomiting, potentially with white or blood-tinged material. Abdominal pain and cramping. Swelling or blistering of the lips, mouth, and possibly the esophagus. Signs of shock in severe cases, such as weakness, dizziness, or low blood pressure. Respiratory distress if inhaled fumes affect the airways.

Diagnosis Path: Physical examination focusing on signs of tissue damage. Patient history to identify possible exposure routes and substances involved. Laboratory tests to assess blood chemistry, organ function, and to detect tissue injury. Imaging studies like X-rays or endoscopy to evaluate internal damage, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Chemical analysis if the ingested substance is available for testing.

Treatment Protocols: Immediate removal of the person from contact with the acid source. Supportive care, including intravenous fluids and oxygen if needed. Avoidance of neutralizing agents, as some can cause more tissue injury if used improperly. Pain management with appropriate medications. Endoscopic assessment or surgical intervention in cases of severe tissue damage. Monitoring for complications such as strictures, perforation, or infections. Long-term follow-up for potential complications like scarring or strictures of the esophagus.
