The everyday example is exchanging a wound vacuum-assisted closure dressing, a pressure dressing, or an external drain apparatus placed over a wound or surgical site.
These exchanges happen routinely during wound care, whether in a clinic, wound care center, or hospital setting, and are necessary to keep therapy working effectively, since dressings and external devices lose suction, become soiled, or need periodic replacement to continue promoting healing. Because no incision or new puncture is involved, this is one of the least invasive procedure types in the skin and breast body system.

Breast, Left
Change of a device in the left breast follows the same non-incisional logic as its right-sided counterpart but is tracked separately because the two breasts are distinct body parts in ICD-10-PCS. Typical scenarios include swapping a saline fill port cover on a tissue expander, replacing a surgical drain left after lumpectomy or reconstruction, or exchanging a wound care device during healing on the left side specifically. Left-right distinction matters clinically when a patient has had asymmetric surgery, such as unilateral mastectomy with contralateral risk-reducing procedures, so the record should specify which breast the device occupies. As with any Change procedure, the defining feature is that the replacement occurs through the same route the original device used, without a new surgical opening.
Approach: External
